Application

NICE recommends using the lowest acquisition cost pen needle after considering clinical factors.

Interface pharmacists can support practices to:

Improve patient safety (patient education on injection technique, site rotation and never reusing pen needles)
Improve quality of pen needle prescribing (optimise needle length, prescribed quantity, appropriate issue of safety needles)
Increase practice adherence to formulary and reduce expenditure on pen needles

Interface pharmacists will undertake an assessment of patients’ notes considering the number of pen needles prescribed in the last 12 months and frequency of use in relation to current therapy. Where patients have a pen needle prescription initiated or changed, Interface can facilitate the intervention and provide educational materials to help patients understand optimal injection technique and pen needle use.
